Overview

Cryotherapy is a medical procedure that uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy abnormal skin cells. By applying extreme cold to targeted areas, this treatment effectively addresses a range of skin conditions, including warts, pre-cancerous growths, and benign keratosis. The freezing process causes the affected cells to die and eventually slough off, allowing healthier skin to emerge. Cryotherapy is a quick, minimally invasive procedure with a brief recovery time, making it a popular choice for managing dermatological issues.

Concerns Treated:

  • Warts (small, benign growths caused by viral infections on the skin)
  • Pre-cancerous growths (areas of abnormal cells that may develop into skin cancer)
  • Benign keratosis (non-cancerous, rough patches of skin that can appear with age)

How It Works

Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen, which has an extremely low temperature, to target and freeze abnormal skin cells. When applied to the affected area, the liquid nitrogen rapidly cools the tissue, causing ice crystals to form within the cells. This process disrupts the cell’s structure, leading to its destruction. As the treated cells die, they are gradually shed and replaced by new, healthy skin. The targeted cooling also stimulates the body’s healing response, promoting the regeneration of healthy tissue and reducing the appearance of lesions.

Benefits:

  • Minimally invasive treatment with no need for incisions
  • Quick procedure with minimal discomfort
  • Effective for treating various skin conditions
  • Short recovery time with little to no downtime
  • Promotes rapid healing and skin regeneration
  • Can be performed in an office setting with immediate results

Your Experience

Treatment

During your cryotherapy session, the provider will first clean and prepare the area to be treated. You will be exposed to liquid nitrogen, which is applied to the targeted skin lesions using a specialized spray device. You may experience a brief sensation of cold or discomfort as the liquid nitrogen freezes the abnormal cells. The treatment lasts only a few minutes.

Recovery

You might experience some redness, swelling, or a blister at the treatment site, which is normal and part of the healing process. These side effects resolve on their own within a few days. Cryotherapy involves little to no downtime, so you can resume most activities immediately. It’s important to follow any aftercare instructions provided to ensure proper healing.

Results

You may start to see results within a few weeks as the treated area heals and the abnormal cells are shed. Cryotherapy often requires just one session, but depending on your condition, additional treatments might be necessary to address any additional concerns. The results can be long-lasting, though some conditions may recur over time.
