Overview

Surgical excision is a procedure used to remove skin cancer, precancerous lesions, and abnormal moles. It involves the precise removal of the targeted tissue along with a surrounding margin of healthy skin to ensure complete eradication of any abnormal cells. Performed under local anesthesia, this procedure aims to prevent the spread of cancer and address skin abnormalities effectively. At Seaside Dermatology, our skilled team provides thorough care throughout the process, from the initial excision to follow-up care and beyond.

Concerns Treated:

  • Skin cancer in its early stages
  • Precancerous lesions and actinic keratosis
  • Abnormal or atypical moles
  • Non-cancerous but concerning skin growths

Why It’s Done

Surgical excision is performed to effectively treat and remove cancerous or precancerous skin lesions. It ensures the complete removal of abnormal tissue along with a margin of healthy skin to minimize the risk of recurrence or spread. By excising these areas, the procedure helps prevent further complications and potential progression of skin cancer. Additionally, surgical excision addresses concerning moles or growths that may pose a risk to skin health.

Benefits:

  • Provides precise removal of cancerous or abnormal tissue
  • Ensures complete eradication with a margin of healthy skin
  • Reduces risk of cancer recurrence or spread
  • Allows for thorough examination of excised tissue
  • Promotes effective treatment of both malignant and benign skin conditions
  • Minimally invasive with localized anesthesia for patient comfort

Your Experience

Before

You will have a consultation with your dermatologist to discuss the procedure and address any questions you may have. The area to be treated will be carefully marked, and you may receive instructions on how to prepare. On the day of the procedure, the skin around the lesion will be cleaned, and local anesthesia will be administered to ensure you are pain-free during surgery.

During

During the excision, your dermatologist will remove the lesion along with a margin of healthy skin to ensure all abnormal tissue is eliminated. The removed tissue will be sent to a lab for analysis. You may feel some pressure or pulling, but you should not experience pain due to the anesthesia. The area will be stitched and bandaged to promote healing.

After

After the procedure, you will receive instructions on how to care for the wound, including keeping the area clean and dry. The stitches are usually removed in 1-2 weeks, and pain is generally manageable with over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. You will have follow-up appointments to monitor healing and discuss any further treatment if needed.
